Empowering NRI Parents Through Online Therapy

Empowering NRI Parents Through Online Therapy

In the dynamic and diverse realm of non-resident Indians (NRIs), the journey of nurturing a child with developmental concerns can often feel like navigating uncharted waters. From speech delays to behavioral concerns, every child deserves the chance to be understood and every parent deserves the chance to be supported and guided to help realize their child’s potential. However, at a place far from home country, therapy avenues can be riddled with barriers like language differences, huge therapy costs and/or dearth of nearby comprehensive therapy services, posing a challenge for NRI families, making them feel isolated and unsure about their child’s future.

At Prayatna, we understand the challenges and our online therapy is a revolutionary solution designed to empower NRI parents to support their children with speech therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, special education, and behavior therapy – all at a reasonable cost.

FAQ

Yes, it is possible. For children below 3 years, the parent becomes the primary therapist and we train, guide and support the parents in achieving goals and promoting development. Parent/caregiver involvement and participation plays the pivotal role in online therapy.

The online assessment and observation process for young children vary depending on their online engagement abilities. When cooperation is a challenge during assessment, our therapists may request video recordings of your child’s regular activities. In certain instances, specific task recordings may be sought for deeper insights to identify the problem areas. In the case of children who are 3 years or below, we guide the parents on how to conduct specific activities or tasks with the child during the online session. By observing the child’s response to various stimuli, toys, or tasks facilitated by the parent, the therapist can gain insights into the child’s development skills, communication abilities, and interaction patterns.

At Prayatna, an online therapy session lasts for 45 minutes. The frequency and period of online therapy sessions are recommended based on the child’s strengths, unique needs and parents’ preferences.

It largely depends on many factors including your child’s age. Our therapist will work with the parent/caregiver to determine the best approach based on your child’s age, attention span, comfort level, and the goals of the therapy session.

During online therapy sessions, our therapists creatively use materials commonly available at home in the absence of therapy rooms and therapy materials. For instance, they may suggest using pillows, cushions, and blankets to craft obstacle courses for enhancing gross motor skills in children. Activities such as using small tweezers to pick small objects like beads aid in refining fine motor skills. For children with tactile sensitivity, therapeutic play involving clay, finger painting, and sand may be suggested depending on the child’s likes and needs. It’s important to remain patient as children may require time to adjust to new stimuli. Encouragement and positive reinforcement for even the smallest progress are crucial aspects of our approach.
At Prayatna, our therapists constantly review and assess our online therapy programs for performance improvement. Necessary alterations and modifications are made until the child reaches the desired result.

Prayatna ensures to recruit the best therapists with great care. We are a multi-disciplinary team comprising occupational therapists, speech therapists, behaviour therapists, psychologists, physiotherapists and special educators. All our therapists are qualified and well trained. For more details on the qualifications of our therapists, please check ‘Our Team’.

At Prayatna, our therapists set SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time bound) goals keeping in mind your child’s needs and family’s concerns. Short term and long term goals are set after discussion with parents before onset of therapy and interventions are planned based on your child’s strengths, likes and unique requirements. Our therapists periodically review the goals and align them with your child’s evolving needs. Make sure to check, if what is learnt during therapy sessions are transferring to other settings such as school and other public places. Feel free to discuss with our therapist for feedback on improvement.
