Advantages of Art and Craft Therapy

Better Emotional Stability

Art and Craft promotes creativity and imagination in kids and provides a safe outlet for expressing themselves and their observations about everything around.

Some kids find it difficult to express verbally with regional or popular languages. To be able to visually display their thoughts and ideas with the help of art objects would be a welcome relief to such children and their parents. It invokes a sense of calmness and achievement which accelerates their growth process.

Creative expression through art and craft helps them deal with frustrations and disappointments by fostering patience and coping skills. These activities also impart focus and concentration and improve sitting tolerance in children.

Cognitive Development

While indulging in art activities, kids are not just creating art but are also learning colours and basic math – shapes, measuring, counting, etc.

Art and craft therapy helps a child learn different perspectives and the reality of choices and consequences thus enhancing their problem solving, critical thinking and decision making skills.

Unlike academics, there is no ‘the correct answer/solution’. This invariably prompts them to explore more.  Each child’s creation has uniqueness and individuality that makes them happy and gain due recognition.

Motor Development

Though emotional and psychological benefits of art therapy are predominant, physical development plays its part and cannot be neglected. Primarily all art and craft activities necessitate good coordination between thought and action which is a key step in development.

Some children have difficulties using small muscles specifically those in hands and fingers – they may find it hard to pick small objects, hold a spoon or hold a pencil or crayon. Art & craft encourages use of these small muscles. Our therapist guides these children on different ways of manipulating these muscles to their advantage with the help of drawing, colouring, cutting and craft activities. Dance and play involves multiple senses and full physical movement. It teaches them different modes of manoeuvring and controlling large muscles in arms and legs for better movements in daily life.

Bilateral Coordination

This involves use of both hands to perform a task. Children need both hands while tying their shoe lace, catching a ball, bathing, getting dressed, folding paper or dress etc.

Art & craft activities encourage involvement of both hands. Painting, drawing, colouring, cutting, clay modelling, quilling are few of the activities at Prayatna that guides children to use both hands in sync under the supervision of a trained therapist experienced with children.

Eye-hand Coordination

Art & craft requires good coordination between eyes and hands. Most of the activities in our everyday life involve eye-hand coordination. Children need to use their eyes and hands simultaneously for grasping objects, playing an instrument, catching and throwing a ball, writing etc.

Children with vision impairment and movement disorders may have difficulties with eye-hand coordination. Practising art & craft help in strengthening eye-hand coordination.

Better Self Awareness

Some kids may be overly sensitive to certain textures, smells, sounds etc. Some others may be under-sensitive to the same stimuli. When these kids get disturbed by an annoying noises, touches, smells etc., it makes them lose focus on what they are doing.

Sensory based activities in art and craft therapy facilitates understanding personal feelings and emotions better. Since all activities are goal-based and performed under the guidance of therapist, it ensures positive growth. It shows the child how he can engage his senses to communicate constructively on different levels – drawing, painting, sculpting and performing arts like dancing, music or play.

Art and Craft gives them opportunity to comprehend differences between people and accept individual perception.

Stress Management

While children face challenges every day as they learn new things, expectations of parents and others around create anxiety and stress in them. Fear of failure, shame and the inability to express their feelings triggers more stress resulting in anger, tantrums, restlessness, withdrawal etc.

Our therapist guides children through art activities with the aim of calming their mind and helping them explore ways to tackle stressful situations. Materials used in art and craft therapy itself can invoke a sense of calming effect in kids. Calming the mind slows down rapid thought process within and reduces anxiety and stress. This eventually helps the child to think and understand what is happening, and process feelings and events encouragingly.

Increased Self Esteem

Art & craft therapy makes children feel creative, appreciated, nurtured and accepted. This helps in creating a positive self image in them.  As children get to see their finished products, they feel a sense of accomplishment which makes them confident, happy, excited and fully participatory in these activities.

Better Social Skills

Children who are good at socializing perform better as adults as they connect and communicate with empathy easily.

Art and Craft activities provide a nonverbal platform for expressing ideas and emotions which are sometimes difficult for children with special needs. It helps in expressing thoughts and feelings with the aid of art and craft materials. Negative emotions like being angry or hurt can be expressed through painting, poem, music, dance, clay modelling etc. thus encouraging better social relationships. This helps in communicating their thoughts and needs in a socially acceptable manner which improves relationship management and socialization.

Individual & Group Programs

At Prayatna, Art programs are practiced in individual and group sessions to encourage inter-personal and communication skills in children. Through group activities, they learn to share, accept the differences, cooperate and work as a team.

In individual therapy settings, therapist chooses activities that promote trust and relationship management between the child, parent and the therapist. Programs involving siblings of kids with developmental/learning difficulties aim at empowering and encouraging sibling relationships and understanding.
